Metal Fabricator

Experienced Metal Fabricator wanted for varied workshop and site-based structural steel work, including fabrication, welding, erection, rigging. On commercial and civil projects.


About the role

As a Metal Fabricator you will be responsible for the fabrication, assembly, welding, erection, installation, rigging, temporary support, alignment, and associated building support works relating to structural steel components. The role includes workshop fabrication, on-site steel erection, site measuring, preparation and interpretation of basic fabrication drawings, installation of temporary timber propping and bracing systems, and assistance with concrete boxing and formwork around erected structural steel elements where concrete encasement or casing is required.

Key responsibilities

  • Read and interpret structural and engineering drawings, specifications, and welding procedures.
  • Measure, cut, shape, drill, and prepare steel sections, plates, beams, columns, braces, and other structural components needed for job completion.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and install structural steel frames, trusses, beams, columns, braces, and related components.
  • Perform MIG, TIG, FCAW, arc welding, or other welding processes on structural steel in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Carry out site measuring and take accurate measurements for fabrication and installation purposes.
  • Prepare, interpret, and work from basic fabrication drawings, sketches, and site measurements as required.
  • Assist with the erection, installation, standing, alignment, securing, and adjustment of structural steel components on construction sites.
  • Perform rigging and lifting duties associated with positioning and installing structural steel components.
  • Install temporary timber propping, bracing, and support systems to stabilise structural steel and building components during erection and construction.
  • Assist with the fabrication and installation of concrete boxing and formwork around the bases of erected structural steel columns and beams where concrete encasement or casing is required.
  • Check measurements, levels, plumb, alignment, and structural positioning against project drawings and specifications.
  • Carry out repairs, modifications, adjustments, and general construction support related to structural steel works.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, fabrication equipment, lifting equipment, and other relevant machinery safely and effectively.
  • Maintain compliance with New Zealand workplace health and safety requirements and company safety procedures.
  • Undertake any other duties as reasonably required by the employer.

What we are looking for

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in structural steel fabrication, welding, steel erection, rigging, and/or building construction work.
  • Experience reading and interpreting structural and engineering drawings.
  • Practical experience with structural steel fabrication, welding processes, and on-site steel installation.
  • AS/NZS 2980 welding qualification preferred, but not essential as certification can be gained with the employer.
  • Experience with rigging, lifting operations, standing steel, temporary timber propping, and concrete boxing/formwork is highly desirable.
  • Ability to carry out site measuring and prepare or interpret basic fabrication drawings.
  • Ability to work both in a workshop environment and on construction sites.
